Cenie, Mme de Graffigny's much appreciated piece nouvelle of 1750 will be re-evaluated with two other plays, Graffigny's La Fille d'Aristide (1758) and Nivelle de la Chaussee's La Gouvernante (1747). Their common topic revolves around the fate of a young woman. Cenie and La Gouvernante figure governesses revealed as their pupil's biological mother, but function on two different moral systems. In Cenie the mother-daughter relation is constructed by, equal speaking time, intersubjective dialogue, a fluid power structure, character triangulations not necessarily leading to dominance, character relations (mother-daughter) that happen before they are named. In La Gouvernante power is hierarchical so mother and daughter play a zero-sum game of controller and controlled, triangulations fall into the Oedipal mode, information is meted out by those who have for control. La Fille d'Aristide wants to value the father-daughter relationship but the mother's absence poses dangers: transgression of the incest taboo and of non-identity for the daughter. Obedience to several father-figures keeps the characters together: all profess to keep the young woman safe but she is only a vehicle for those who want to get to the top. The sign of the father remains, interdicting and normalizing, refusing an identity to the daughter and obscuring that of the mother.

520 $a Plays and such products function as events for catharsis or as transitional objects for the loss, or fear of loss, of an object. The object here is the taboo of losing the young woman. The play performs the act of the taboo, therefore cathartic. Cenie is the reiteration of the fear of loss of mother by daughter, a re-enactment of the presence of subject-object equilibrium. La Gouvernante, while recreating the same fear of loss, presents the opposite of the moment of equilibrium. By obscuring the mother La Fille d'Aristide reiterates the fear of the loss of maman and demonstrates the danger posed to the young woman.
