The primary function of lighting is to enable people to see. Lighting also has the capacity to influence human behavior such as impressions, emotional reactions and attention. Moreover, lighting can be used to direct circulation. A well-designed circulation system is crucial to wayfinding. People depend on various environmental factors such as signage, maps, and colors to find their way in a building. Lighting is another important environmental factor affecting wayfinding. Lighting can serve as a cue to direct the movement of people during their wayfinding tasks.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This study examines how lighting serves as a cue to direct circulation and how it influences people when they encounter a choice between a left and a right pathway. An experimental room was set up for the study in which the left and right pathways had the same visual appeal except for the illumination contrast ratio. It was hypothesized that when one of two equivalent paths is more brightly lit, individuals will tend to choose the brighter path. It was also hypothesized that the higher the illumination contrast ratio between the left and right paths, the more people will choose the brighter path. Subjects were asked to choose between a left and a right path under seven different illumination contrast ratios. The ratios between the left to right paths were 1:1, 5:1, 10:1, and 20:1 and between the right to left paths were 1:1, 1:5, 1:10, and 1:20. The range of the illumination level was between 50lux (5fc) and 1000lux (100fc).

Results of this study reveal that lighting affects path selection. Most of the subjects selected the bright path rather than the dim path. Illumination contrast ratios between 1:1 and 1:5 have a significant effect in increasing path usage. However, increasing the illumination contrast ratio above 1:5 has no additional effect in attracting more people to the bright path. This indicates that increasing the level of light does not always mean an increase in the amount of people who choose the bright path. The results of this study suggest that lighting is an effective environmental cue and can contribute to wayfinding.
