This work is concerned with how Christian theology treats the question of religious others---those persons and communities judged to fall outside the boundaries of "Christianity"---along with what I will call their "witness," which includes (but is not restricted to) their beliefs, traditions, practices, and religious experiences. This is a critical and constructive inquiry in Christian theology, aimed at understanding some of the ways in which modern Christian theology has treated the religious other, and proposing an alternative.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This work attempts to move dialogue with religious others to the very heart of Christian systematic theology, rather than treating it solely as a peripheral concern for specialists (the "theology of religions" paradigm). Building upon and extending the work of Joerg Rieger, and drawing upon key concepts from the philosophy of Alain Badiou, I argue that Christian thought about other religions has paid insufficient attention to the power dynamics inherent in Christianity's own boundary-drawing and identity-formation. To the extent that these dynamics marginalize religious others and repress their experience and witness, they also block Christian self-understanding and, more importantly, encounter with the divine Other to whom Christians seek to be faithful. My work paves the way for a theology which is both authentically Christian and informed by the witness of religious others.

The dissertation critically examines the work of four modern theologians---Schleiermacher, Barth, Lindbeck, and Gutierrez---looking at how each theologian discursively constructs both the Christian and religious others, and identifying ways in which their discourse facilitates or blocks meaningful encounter with religious others. It concludes by outlining a methodology for moving interreligious dialogue to the center of Christian systematic theology.
