This dissertation is a comprehensive interdisciplinary study of the topos of love and war across the categories of music, art and poetry in Italy in the early modern period. I explore Monteverdi's 1638 Madrigali guerrieri et amorosi in the context of this vibrant tradition, which had acquired a particular value at this time, both as a signifier of the numerous social and political crises of the period and---in the realm of the arts---for its association with innovation. In an analysis of madrigals preceding Book Eight, I define an extant musical language of love and war, thus demonstrating how Monteverdi as well as his predecessors embraced the topos as part of an increasingly self-conscious concern with novelty, drama, and imitation. In addition, I consider the implications of the "war on love"---a prominent thread in the poetic tradition---in terms of an early modern gender ideology that pervades both Book Eight, and a number of love and war madrigals set by early modern women composers.
