The Christian encounter with non-Christian religions is inevitable. Two significant voices in the encounter are Raimundo Panikkar and Robert C. Zaehner. Both are writing in response to the Vatican II statement that the (Roman) Church rejects nothing holy and true in non-Christian religions.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Raimundo Panikkar believes that dialogue is the best method of encounter. Dialogue is a religious experience, and the participants in dialogue are mutually enriched by the shared experience of God. He maintains that the human experience of God is diverse and can be divided into three "Spiritualities." The Christian understanding of the Trinity encompasses these experiences and is therefore the key to interreligious dialogue. Panikkar further believes that Christ is present in the other religions even where he is not known as Christ, and he is not limited merely to Jesus of Nazareth.

Panikkar's strength lies in that he allows different expressions of faith to stand inside the saving scope of the Son, whom he calls Christ. His view of the Trinity shows the Son to be active in all religions. The greatest weakness is that he separates Christ from Jesus, an untenable position, since the Messianic title "Christ" is biblically and historically ascribed uniquely to Jesus.

R. C. Zaehner is influenced predominantly by the evolutionary program of Teilhard de Chardin. He divides religions into Semitic, or prophetic, and Indian, or mystical, religions. He claims that Christianity, particularly Roman Catholicism, contains the best of both types and is therefore the fulfillment of all religions. Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of all prophecy and mysticism. The world is being drawn by the Holy Spirit in an evolutionary process toward fulfillment in Christ and the (Roman) Church.

Zaehner maintains an orthodox view of Jesus, the Christ. Yet his claims that Christ is the fulfillment of all religious aspirations, and that salvation lies in the Roman Catholic Church, would not be acceptable to other religions. His view must be regarded as imperialistic, and not conducive to dialogue.
