The sixth century B.C.E. Babylonian invasions of Judah had a devastating effect for the nation. First, the Babylonians systematically dismantled the physical infrastructure of many major Judean towns and cities, chiefly, the city of Jerusalem. Along with the destruction of physical structures, e.g., the temple and the royal palace, the Babylonians also deported many of the leading citizens, bringing the Davidic monarchy to an end. The displacement of the ruling elites, i.e., the king, priests, and prophets, and the absence of the structures that had served Judah for centuries, meant that the Judeans had lost several of the institutions on which they had relied to form their identity.

Using classical rhetoric, I analyze the speeches of Deutero-Isaiah in order to discover the underlying problem that he addresses in the book. The analysis shows that the prophet was concerned above all with the relegitimization of YHWH before the Judeans. It appears that many Judeans had lost hope in their God's ability to help them. As a result, many had deserted Yahwism, or may have adopted a form of syncretism as a way to adapt to life in Babylon. In response, Deutero-Isaiah's rhetoric shows that he stressed the reliability of YHWH's character and word. If the Judeans were able to believe that YHWH was the supreme God, then they could believe the promises that he made with regard to their liberation from Babylon, and their rebirth as a nation. In that sense, Deutero-Isaiah provided a vision for the exiles to hold on to. The vision consisted of an alternative ideology to that advanced by the Babylonians. The vision included the reestablishment of a healthy relationship between YHWH and Judah, and the emergence of Judah as a powerful nation.
