The purpose of this study was to determine whether the textual cohesiveness of the manuscripts comprising Family 1739 in Acts, as identified by Thomas C. Geer Jr., also occurred in Hebrews. The methodology developed by Geer, with some adaptations, was utilized. A comprehensive profiling of manuscripts 323, 424c, 630, 945, 1739, 1881, and 1891 was conducted at four levels of analysis. The first level identified the textual traditions represented by the individual Family 1739 manuscripts in Hebrews. The second level confirmed the manuscripts as a grouping by analyzing their textual relationships among the primary and secondary group readings. The third level examined how the manuscripts related throughout Hebrews as a whole and in four subdivisions of chapters in Hebrews. The final level focused on the singular and sub-singular readings in order to determine the extent of the transmission influence existing among the Family 1739 witnesses.

Dissimilar conclusions from Geer's findings were revealed. The manuscripts comprising Family 1739 in Acts do not maintain the same level of textual cohesiveness in Hebrews. As primary members of Family 1739 in Acts, manuscripts 630, 945, and 1891 clearly are not significantly related to manuscript 1739 in Hebrews. Instead, two separate groups emerged: (1) the Byzantine cluster of 323, 630, 945, and 1891; and (2) the Alexandrian pair of 1739 and 1881. The two groups break up the Family 1739 manuscripts along the lines of the known Byzantine and Alexandrian textual traditions. Codices 323 and 945 constitute the primary members among the Byzantine witnesses, with manuscripts 630 and 1891 making up the secondary level of witnesses within the Byzantine grouping. Codex 1739 continues as a leading member of the Alexandrians based on both the internal (textual quality) and external (date of the manuscript) evidence. Without a doubt, the tenth-century manuscript 1739 represents the special quality of the Alexandrian textual tradition. Codices 1739 and 1881 comprise the primary members of the Alexandrian grouping, with 424c strongly related to 1739 and 1881 but not as a steady member. Based on the textual relationship between codices 1739 and 1881, the present study asserts that the text of manuscript 1881, dated to the fourteenth-century, represents the Byzantine tradition with strong Alexandrian influence. In spite of the lack of support for the thesis, this study did reveal the valuable alliance between 1739 and 1881.
