Scholars have moved away from denigrating Psalm 86 towards appreciating its coherence and inquiring the rationale of its purposeful placement. Chapter one demonstrates the need for investigating the purposeful placement of Psalm 86 especially in light of Wilson's compositional reading of the Psalter and recent hermeneutical, epistemological, text-critical, and linguistic developments. Chapter two presents an exposition of Psalm 86. After establishing the text, it provides detailed semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic analyses.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Chapter three investigates the different tensions and correspondences between Psalm 86 and other psalms in Book III. It concludes that the placement of Psalm 86 in the midst of the second Korah sequence and in Book III is theologically significant. The reemergence of David as servant, poor and needy, as well as a godly one in the context of explicit monotheism and in juxtaposition to a multiethnic Zion is crucial for deconstructing the king-centered worldview of Psalm 72 and for advocating a global God who brings about the city of God through His loving-kindness that extends to all the nations.
520 $a Chapter four probes the Davidic superscriptions as well as David's self designations in Psalm 86 in light of the different portraits of David in the Psalter. It argues that the Davidic superscription of Psalm 86 and the pertinent Davidic designations are editorially significant not only in relating David to Moses, to serving the nations nonviolently but also in presenting David as poor and needy.
