The book of Jonah and its place within the Old Testament canon has long been accepted by scholars. However, the section of the book known as "Jonah's Psalm" (Jonah 2:3-10) has been the target of some objection with respect to its integrity, purpose, and meaning since the advent of Old Testament literary criticism.

520 $a In this work Jonah's Psalm is subjected to a five-step exegetical process involving the biblical disciplines of textual criticism, syntax and grammar, lexical semantics, literary analysis, and biblical theology. It is through this analytical process that the text is allowed to speak for itself with respect to matters of integrity, compositional strategy, and meaning.
520 $a When exegetically analyzed, Jonah's Psalm is shown to be much more than a poem haphazardly inserted within the narrative text. Instead, the psalm provides a sense of expression concerning Jonah's experience, substance to the structure of the book, and theological significance of the book's message. The significance of the psalm resides not only in its location within the book of Jonah, but also its relationship to the book of Psalms. Through a technique of inter-textuality, the author not only points the reader to the book of Psalms in general, but also specifically to portions of the Psalms which carry a messianic theme. In the end, the writer of Jonah desires for the reader to arrive at the same observation and confession of Jonah and the Scriptures as a whole; salvation is of the Lord.
