Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Iowa, 1986.
This study predicates that archetypal criticism is the most comprehensive approach to Tayeb Salih's fiction. This approach is contingent on the principle of wholeness which Salih advocates. He is concerned with the response of the whole man. Therefore, he rejects Socialist Realism because of its partiality; rigid ideology of any political persuasion threatens to destroy man's independence.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Salih does not deal with social criticism per se. His major concern is the individual. The individual must retreat into isolation to find himself as a necessary step for coping with his existential problems. When man is individuated, the external world of fragmentations correspondingly disappear. In The Wedding of Zein, the conflicts reach equilibrium through the complex interconnections of Zein's unification of his psyche and that of the village's. In Season of Migration to the North, the narrator (who is governed by the theme of individuation) becomes a fuller man after his introspective withdrawal to the Nile. He accepts the responsibility of choosing life, driving towards an integrative view of time and the East-West conflict. In Bandar Shah, Salih shifts the emphasis to a group of characters. Bandar Shah's myth represents Wad Hamid's collective unconscious. Yet Salih's interest here lies less in the individuation of a single character than in the archetypal theme of the "Second Coming." The breaking of the vicious circle of Bandar Shah's transformation is thoroughly discussed.

Freedom from the past can reinstate the primacy of the self, allowing for self-exploration. Yet it can alienate the individual in his society, leading to his disintegration. Therefore, one must seek in the past what is "usable," a past which is continuous with contemporary experience.
