Thesis (Ed.D.)--Utah State University, 2006.
The present study examined the learning effects in chemistry from a microworld electronic text on students (10th-12th grades) with differences in prior knowledge. Participants consisted of 116 chemistry students from a rural public school that were assigned to study three text conditions that included an interactive microworld electronic text, portable document format (pdf), and printed version of the same text. Students' background knowledge in science and mathematics was determined by a survey, and prior chemistry knowledge was assessed by a pretest. A posttest assessed overall learning along with recall, comprehension, and conceptual knowledge. There was no significant relationship among the text conditions on learning chemistry concepts of kinetic theory of gases. However, there were significant relationships among general background knowledge, measured by grade point average, and prior knowledge of kinetic theory of gases, measured by a pretest, on overall achievement and recall knowledge.Subjects--Topical Terms:
