The increasing rate of obesity has become a global concern. Obesity is the most common health problem facing young people. This series of papers examines the complex and often confusing issues relating to juvenile obesity. The physical, social, emotional and financial aspects of the disease are explored. The many possible causes of obesity are discussed with an emphasis on some of the modifiable behaviors, such as the home environment. The persuasive impact of conflicting messages being sent to juveniles by food advertisers and food manufacturers are reviewed. Additionally, larger portion sizes and the quantity of available unhealthy food choices are addressed. The final paper calls attention to the need for a clear message to be presented to today's juveniles by parents, physicians, schools, communities and the government when providing strategies to help combat juvenile obesity.
