Thesis (M.S.)--Stephen F. Austin State University, 2006.
This study explored a range of meanings visitors attach to the resources within Theodore Roosevelt National Park, how these meanings relate to park significance statements, and if there may be possible patterns in what visitors of differing demographics find meaningful. The study used an emergent approach to examine these associations. Ten focus group interviews were conducted with forty-four park visitors. Results reveal that these visitors found four of the seven park significance statements most meaningful. These visitors associated the badlands environment with peace, beauty and difficulty, thought of wildlife in terms of family, power, and survival, and linked Roosevelt to the place with nostalgia for a simpler lifestyle, thoughts of Roosevelt's toughness, the importance of his contributions to conservation, and the opportunity to relate to Roosevelt as a common man. Visitors identified with resources in broader and more diverse ways than stated in park significance statements. A conceptual model was developed to help better understand the spectrum of meaning attachment as it relates to park significance as written by park management. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
