Graduates of osteopathic medical schools can now train in osteopathic, allopathic, or combined postgraduate residency training programs. Since osteopathic graduates now have more choice for residency training than ever before, the profession must understand whether recent osteopathic graduates are satisfied with their training, their careers, and the choices that they have made.

The purpose of this study was to determine if a difference in the level of satisfaction with type of training, job, career, and specialty choice exists among recent DO graduates who pursue family medicine residency training in one of three family medicine residency training tracks; osteopathic, allopathic or dually-trained residency programs.

The author produced, administered, and interpreted a satisfaction survey that was presented to a cohort of osteopathic family medicine physicians who recently completed residency training. This survey commenced in June, 2006.

The survey was sent to 2284 individuals with an adjusted response rate of 37%. Results indicated significant differences in overall satisfaction and residency satisfaction, finding that ACGME trained physicians were more satisfied that either dually trained or AOA trained physicians.

Overall, some 23% of those physicians surveyed are less than happy with their career choice. This is consistent with 10% thinking of changing specialties away from family medicine and 33% reporting that family medicine does not provide the job security that it once did. These data are especially disconcerting in that these are not older physicians ready to retire, but recently trained physicians in the beginning of their career. These results transcend the differences in satisfaction among AOA, Dually trained, and ACGME trained physicians.

Further work is needed to control for disparate sample sizes, address the reasons for dissatisfaction among all three groups and compare satisfaction between MD and DO family physicians.
