Thesis (M.S.E.)--University of Massachusetts Lowell, 2006.
A hybrid biogas and solar collector system was developed and modeled to produce methane gas from farm waste for low temperatures and high altitudes. This particular hybrid system must function in synchrony in order to sustain the operation at low temperatures where it is designed to function. The function of the solar collector is to provide hot water to keep the inside of the biodigester above 35°C in order to achieve higher efficiency in bacterial and biogas production (Lichtman, 1983). The model is based on the principles of solar energy, heat transfer and the finite control volume approximation technique. A pilot installation was partially constructed in January on site in Peru at Cochapeti, a village in Ancash Province (Peruvian Andes Mountains, 9.98 S, 77.65 W, 3400 m above sea level). Information collected at this site will be processed and analyzed for future adjustments and modifications to the system. This particular prototype will support a family with six members for cooking, and it will need three cows to keep running and should have a payback of about five years and four months.Subjects--Topical Terms:
