Study of the music of the California mission era (c. 1769-1823) is a topic relatively new to musicologists. Among the largely unexamined works composed by early nineteenth-century musicians living in California, the music copied in the Libro de Coro of Narciso Duran (the Duran choirbook, "BANC MS C-C 59) offers intriguing possibilities for continued research. The choirbook also provides invaluable indications of contemporaneous performance practice for those interested in presenting California mission music to a modern audience. This project is an attempt to place a representative sample of Duran's work into context through the examination of the history of the California mission music, the efforts of other Franciscan musicians, and the Libro de Coro itself.
