With the edict of expulsion issued by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain in 1492, Jews were either forced to leave Spain or to convert to Catholicism. Some Jews decided to convert in name only and continued to practice Judaism in secret. The descendants of these families, known as Crypto-Jews, still exist and continue to practice Judaism in secret and more than 500 years later, they are decided to come out as a Jew. A good number of these people live in the Southwestern United States, such as Rabbi Yosef Garcia's congregation of Phoenix, Arizona, which is the first openly Crypto-Jewish Synagogue in the world.Subjects--Topical Terms:
