Julian of Norwich (c.1343--c.1416) wrote about her visionary experience in two separate texts: the earlier, primarily descriptive short version and the later, largely interpretive long version. This thesis argues that by employing several kinds of language, by constructing the anchorite as a socially utile figure, and by solidifying her interpretations of her revelations, Julian's long text appeals to a wider audience than the short text does, although the long version's greater theological complexity might suggest a more specialized appeal.Subjects--Topical Terms:
