The purpose of this research paper was to provide a class of bassoon students with a quick reference tool and a program of study to assist the development of various practice and performance skills by the creation of a university course pack. It was designed as an introduction to research and an overview of the many topics a bassoonist might encounter in performance through the combined use of sources such as method books, journal articles, books by reputable bassoonists and pedagogues, and the researcher's own teaching techniques.

520 $a Three solo works were used as a framework upon which to build this study: Concerto in E Minor, RV 484 by Antonio Vivaldi, Andante e rondo ungarese, op. 35 by Carl Maria von Weber and the Rhapsody for bassoon by Willson Osborne. The musical and technical requirements of each bassoon solo helped determine the choice of supplementary reference materials. The whole project was driven by the needs of the researcher's current students, who provided a good cross section of ability level, maturity and dedication.
520 $a The body of the paper is divided into four chapters, the first of which explains the concepts behind this research project. Chapter II describes the production of the course pack and how and why additional materials were compiled for use in the repertoire class. Chapter III of the paper contains a separate section dedicated to each of the chosen solo works and then supplies pedagogical information to help overcome perceived technical problems of these pieces. Chapter IV contains student reactions to the course material.
