Thesis (Psy.D.)--The Wright Institute, 2006.
This research examines the accuracy of stereotypes prevalent in western societies regarding males' and females' different experiences and expressions of emotions, and considers why, if these stereotypes are inaccurate, they persist. These questions are addressed by comparing and contrasting the findings of researchers and theoreticians from several schools of thought and areas of study. Studies on the gender and emotion connection in adults and children from the last thirty years are reviewed, as well as biological and evolutionary explanations for gender differences, including research on brain chemistry and functioning. Consideration is also given to perspectives about the gender/emotion connection from social psychology, psychoanalytic theory, feminist theory and men's studies. Finally, the research integrates the literature through discussion and conclusions.
