There were two major purposes of this study, one was to study the potential of the microcalorimeter for determining the heat production and kinetics of composting examined in this thesis and the other was the determination of the thermophysical properties of composting materials. The responses of the rate of heat production due to microbial activity were recorded in the form of a thermogram using the microcalorimetric technique for each of the nutrients. Among the nutrients, steam exploded wood and chopped wood did not show any heat production which indicates a lack of activity of microorganisms. Later on, 50 percent sewage sludge and 50 percent steam exploded wood were thoroughly mixed together and tested. Similarly, 50 percent chopped wood and 50 percent sewage sludge were mixed and tested.

The percent reduction of volatile solids indicates that at thermophilic temperatures, in this case 50(DEGREES)C, the decomposition rate is higher than at 25(DEGREES)C and 37(DEGREES)C.

The observed thermograms indicate the importance of moisture content for the microbial population to utilize the nutrients (sewage sludge, steam exploded wood, and chopped wood). Moisture contents below 10 percent did not show any heat production. At this condition the microorganisms were probably inactive since by adding a little water to the nutrients, the process goes on again.

For the determination of the thermophysical properties of the composting materials, particularly the specific heat and thermal conductivity, a total of 10 sets of experiments were conducted. The measurements of specific heat and thermal conductivity indicate linear relationship with moisture content but not with stages of decomposition.
