Although recent research has shown relationships among nutrition, physical education, and other health components, the relationship between a multi-component school health program and academic achievement has been meagerly investigated. This study investigated a possible link between multi-component school health programs, measured by the School Health Policies and Programs Survey (SHPPS), and academic achievement, measured by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). The study used 6 of the 8 components of a multi-component school health program to predict academic achievement. Poverty was controlled for by adding the percentage of Children in Poverty Under 18 and using the U.S. Census and Federal Medical Assistance Percentages as predictors. Results indicate that poverty demonstrates a strong negative relationship with academic achievement. When poverty is controlled for, components of a multi-component school health program have statistically significant (p < .05) relationships with academic achievement.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Further results of this study suggest a positive relationship between multi-component school health programs and students' academic scores. The findings have implications for future practice related to funding and time allocated in schools for health-related programs. Results indicate that students in States with policies promoting students' health demonstrate higher academic scores on the NAEP tests than students in States that do not have health-promoting policies. These policies include: (1) regular participation in physical education (in both elementary and high school), (2) appropriate nutritional culture (such as prohibiting junk food and food as a reward), (3) services to address students' health needs (physical and/or mental), (4) preventing harassment at school.
520 $a These findings are relevant to school districts as they comply with new federal regulations to create a wellness policy for nutrition and physical activity. Implications of findings and recommendations for future research are discussed.
