In recent years, researchers in the areas of physical education and sport and exercise psychology have shown a tremendous interest in the relation between self-concept and sport and exercise achievement. Although there is a body of research suggesting that self-perception of physical competence is more highly correlated with physical achievement than with general self-concept, there is little research on the causal relations among these three constructs. The purpose of this study was to examine the longitudinal evidence of causal relationships among global self-esteem, physical self-perceptions, and fitness achievement and employed a model which estimated the cross-lagged structural effects among these three constructs at two time points.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Data were collected from a sample of 282 college students from two midwestern universities during the fourth and fourteenth week of the Fall semester. Measures of the the latent variables were assessed using Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale, Fox and Corbin's Self-Perception Scale and three health-related fitness tests: VO

ax, flexibility, and strength. A causal model was developed and tested with longitudinal structural modeling by means of the LISREL VII program. The results indicated that fitness achievement, physical self-perceptions, and general self-esteem remained stable from Time 1 to Time 2. However, the results provided no evidence of causal relationships among these three constructs over time. Finally, the results of this study demonstrated the importance of estimating and removing the effects of correlated measurement errors as well as the effects of residual errors when testing longitudinal causal models.

The findings emphasized the advantages of using longitudinal structural equation models for testing complex causal relationships within the sport and exercise psychology area. In addition, a number of important assumptions in the analysis of longitudinal data are discussed.
