The experiences of seven women student athletic training students interning at a West Coast Comprehensive University with a Division I athletics program were revealed through a qualitative research method. A group discussion comprised of 7 open-ended questions followed by individual interviews consisting of 4 open-ended questions and follow up questions allowed the women to describe their encounters with male athletes and coaches. The female athletic training students working in a traditionally masculine society enjoyed their work and believed their experiences to be equal to that of their male counterparts. The women, like others, working in a male-dominated profession unknowingly naturalized the differences between genders and accepted gender inequalities that exist in the environment, contributing to the disempowerment of professional women. Gender awareness programs must be implemented in environments where women enter a male-dominated occupation to promote professional relationships and interactions between men and women that are free of gender.
