Over the past forty years, the development of resilience research has yielded insight into certain qualities, characteristics and behaviors that an individual may possess or exercise that contribute to their having the fortitude to bounce back or persevere through adverse situations. Despite the fact that resiliency research has increased greatly, to date, few studies have focused on how African-American children have been able to survive and thrive amidst adversity, and to become successful adults; this area of research "clearly requires more attention" (Miller, 1999). This study aimed to add to the body of resilience research mentioned, but also to balance the information flow on African Americans by presenting research that highlights the positive portrait of African Americans through examining how factors, including supportive relationships in childhood/adolescence, desire to succeed or have a better life in childhood despite adversities experienced, parental relationships, work ethic in childhood/adolescence and academic record in childhood/adolescence influence resilience in a sample of successful African-American Adults. This study also sought to explore how successful African Americans who have experienced "serious threats to their adaptation or development" (Masten, 2001), view resilience as it relates to their own success, as well as African-American people as a whole. Qualitative and quantitative research methods were used to explore the research questions. Interviews were transcribed for content analysis, with several themes emerging. Major influences of resilience in respondent's interviewed included spirituality or strong connections with a higher power, racial identity and connectedness, work ethic, supportive relationships and a strong desire to overcome hardships to achieve a better life. Analysis of survey data revealed relationships between resilience and factors including work ethic, desire to succeed, and parental expectations.
