Thesis (M.A.)--Royal Roads University (Canada), 2006.
This report details an action research project that examined how one healthcare organization could improve its course in Motivational Interviewing (MI) through increased application of the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) in instructional design, better modelling of MI in course delivery, and through consideration of stakeholder experience with the course. Literature related to the TTM, to MI, and to adult learning and instruction is reviewed. A description of the qualitative data collection and analysis process utilized in the project is followed by an outline of the conduct of the study and a review of four major themes and associated sub-themes in the study findings. The conclusion that learning MI is a process and not an event served as a foundation for other evidence-based conclusions and nine recommendations that highlighted the need to draft behavioural objectives that could be accomplished through supervision and other post-workshop activity when learners returned to their work units.
