Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2006.
The purpose of this study was to develop a theory using qualitative grounded theory methods to help explain how the emotions of community college women who balance parenting, job, and school affect their educational decisions. To address the purpose of this study, the researcher pursued these questions: (a) How do the emotions of this population of women affect the decisions they make regarding community college attendance over the course of their enrollment? (b) How do the emotions of this population of women affect the decisions they make in setting aside study time for community college classes over the course of their enrollment? (c) How do the emotions of this population of women affect the decisions they make regarding their choice of community college classes over the course of their enrollment? (d) How do the emotions of this population of women affect the decisions they make regarding their educational and career goals over the course of their enrollment? Emotions reported as affecting decisions to attend were feeling overwhelmed, different, proud, and uncertain of the right or wrong time to attend community college. These emotions affected decisions to attend by resulting in the consequences of self-satisfaction; attendance; nonattendance; depression; withdrawal; self-direction; looking to future rewards; delayed start; and stress and anxiety. Emotions reported as affecting decisions in setting aside time for study were feeling guilt, overwhelmed, and proud as a role model. These emotions affected decisions to attend by resulting in consequences of being able to balance responsibilities, belief in future rewards, and contributions to their children's success. Emotions reported as affecting decisions regarding their choice of classes were anxiety and frustration. These emotions affected choice of classes by resulting in consequences of withdrawal, focus, balance, and success. Emotions reported as affecting decisions of educational and career goals were feeling indecisive and feeling connected. These emotions affected educational and career goals by resulting in withdrawal, choice of career, credits not applying to degree programs, and choosing a service career. The collective effect of withdrawal from school was found to be significant in this study.
