The use of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) as a gamma radiation energy conversion system to power a GPS class device in monitoring the condition and location of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) packaged within a dry storage cask is investigated. An experimental method to test such energy conversion technology is designed and implemented using a digital data acquisition system in combination with a gamma radiation testing facility. Computer models utilizing radiation transport codes are developed to characterize the radiation environment present within the gamma radiation testing facility for comparison to the actual radiation environment experienced within the dry cask storage container. Additional computer modeling using a nonlinear curve fitting routine is also developed to determine the effect of irradiation testing on the DSSC electrical performance parameters. Utilizing the computer modeling results in conjunction with nanoscale microscopy images of DSSCs and empirical cell phenomena, conclusions were developed as to how to modify the DSSC design to better suit this application. Lastly, design feasibility calculations are presented that give insight into improvement goals that must be met for practical integration of the DSSC energy conversion mechanism into an operational SNF monitoring system.
