In 1995, a survey was conducted across Canada of hospitality educators from 55 community colleges and employers from 250 restaurants and fast food chains. Data concerning the importance these employers and educators place on 26 skills and 3 skill areas was gathered through mailed questionnaires. The findings indicate that all of the employability skills and skill areas are important to the hospitality field. Highlights of the findings include: (1) Hospitality educators and hospitality employers are similar in the rating by importance of 20 employability skills and differ in the rating by importance of six skills as a result of t-tests at p = 0.05. (2) The area of Personal Management Skills are perceived as more important by hospitality employers than by hospitality educators. The area of Academic Skills are perceived as more important by hospitality educators than by hospitality employers. These findings were as a result of a Mann-Whitney tests of mean ranks at alpha = 0.000.
