Thesis (M.A.)--Royal Roads University (Canada), 2006.
This action research project was completed in collaboration with the Victoria Chapter of Children's International Summer Villages (CISV), a non-profit volunteer organization that offers a range of educational programs for children and youth from around the world to develop cross-cultural understanding. This inquiry examines the impact of cross-cultural learning on participant's ability to lead change in their community. Participants included members of CISV Victoria responsible for promoting CISV values and peace education at the local level. Their goal was to encourage youth and adult collaboration and to develop a vision for more sustainable community-based projects. The study revealed that participants gained skills and values in leadership, personal development and cross-cultural learning that can be applied to leading change locally. In order to facilitate and develop sustainable community projects the researcher proposes new approaches that encourage greater youth participation and leadership.
