Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Colorado at Boulder, 2006.
This study investigates the relationship between power, knowledge and love. Examining the development of Texas' new high-stakes Social Studies exams, it explores how the test development process contributes to the inclusion and exclusion of particular people, ideas and stories from what is defined as essential historical knowledge and participates in the creation of a selective tradition. I analyze the test development process, along with the content and format of the exam, in order to consider how the state participates in curriculum production and how this participation privileges the inclusion of particular ideas, values and perspectives in school curricula. Finally, this study also considers how this selective tradition, by preparing us to desire some things and not others, supports the maintenance of existing power relations.
