Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Hawai'i at Manoa, 1997.
All the early Ch'an Patriarchs of the Ch'an legends handed down a 'special transmission' of the Lankavatara that emphasized 'mind' without relying on words and letters. In this dissertation we analyze the Platform Sutra philosophy as continuous with, but in contrast to, the philosophy of the Lankavatara-sutra. We maintain that the 'special transmission' emphasizes the organic unity of experience and practice, consisting of a non-substantialist, 'middle-way' interpretation of experience in the Platform and the Lankavatara-sutras.

Chapter one is an introduction to the internal structures and relations of the Lankavatara and Platform Sutras. The Lankavatara has been interpreted on the basis of the co-ordination of its different teachings. The logical movement of the Ch'an legends towards the Platform Sutra can be seen to emphasize the Lankavatara in terms of highlighting mind in non-dual experience and practice. Logically, the Platform Sutra's three categories of thirty-five polarities represent a methodology to express this experience as a form of meditational practice.

In chapter two we highlight the Lankavatara-sutra's emphasis on the mind-ground of the skandhas. The skandhas are given organic expression in the Awakening of Faith's paradigm of 'one mind in two aspects'. We show how the Platform Sutra's polar methodology highlights the organic experience of mind in the process of becoming. This process is symbolically reconstructed as five polar expressions of mutually complementary mind-ground, which is dependently arisen in the experience of consciousness and forms of representation, together.

In chapter three we argue that the conditioned aspect of mind is organically experienced in the mutually complementary arising of phenomena and language. Although the Lankavatara has been represented as advocating the absolute transcendence of language (i.e., Fa-tsang, Suzuki), we highlight a special interpretation of the Lankavatara in terms transcending language in the context of dependently arisen phenomena. Whereas the Lankavatara and the Awakening of Faith use language to highlight the positive reality where language drops off, the Platform Sutra highlights the Madhyamika concepts of emptiness to free-up the empirical subject's use of language and phenomena. Both can be shown to imply a 'going beyond' the dispositionally conditioned forms of language and phenomena as contraries apart. In the Platform Sutra, twelve polarities are symbolically reconstructed to express the mutually complementary nature of language and phenomena moving hand-in-hand on the mind ground, as contraries of language and phenomena, in polarity together.

In chapter four, the arising and functioning of self-nature is analyzed. The Lankavatara-sutra's tri-kaya theory can be seen to metaphorize self-nature in terms of organic experience and enlightenment practice. The treatment of practice in the Platform Sutra, characterized by the arising and functioning self-nature in eighteen polarities, represents a special transmission of an organic experience of becoming, in 'formless practice'. As such, the Lankavatara and Platform Sutra's tri-kaya theories represent a continuum of the dispositionally conditioned object of discrimination, disclosed suddenly for the purpose of integrating the object of sense consciousness in dependently arisen practice.
