Thesis (M.S.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2006.
The purpose of this study was to investigate how a group of university students characterized how being a transfer student influenced their overall college experience. This study employed a qualitative approach using individual interviews to examine the transfer student experience. The results of this study demonstrate that the actions and policies of 4-year institutions play a significant role in shaping the students' experiences. Articulation, registration timing, and academic advising surfaced as major issues for transfer students. A significant finding of the study was that the participants were regretful about their choice to attend a 2-year school first. Along with the hassles of transferring, these students felt that they had missed the traditional college experience. The students in this study felt both overlooked and overwhelmed during their transition. Four-year colleges should examine their role in the transfer process and proactively address the needs of these students.
