The innovative idea of using a tungsten coil as the atomization device for analytical atomic spectrometry surfaced in the early 1970's when Williams and Piepmeier proposed the use of a tungsten filament extracted from a light bulb. It was only 16 years later when Berndt and Schaldach were the first to introduce the tungsten coil as an electrothermal atomizer in atomic absorption spectrometry.

Three novel simultaneous multi-element W coil techniques have been developed. First, a continuum source tungsten coil atomic absorption spectrometer (CS-WCAAS) system was designed, fabricated and applied for simultaneous multi-element analyses of various complex sample media, such as: engine oil, urine and polluted water. Second, an atomic absorption spectrometer was developed which employed a single W coil as both the continuum source and the atomizer. The phenomenon was named Fraunhofer Effect Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (FE-AAS), after Joseph von Fraunhofer who first explained the appearance of the dark lines in the solar spectrum. Third, tungsten coil atomic emission spectrometry (WCAES) was observed and reported for the first time. Such advancements in W coil instrumentation opens many avenues and adds powerful new techniques to the compilation of techniques currently available to the atomic spectroscopist.

The tungsten coil serves as an excellent choice for an atomizer. All three techniques (CS-WCAAS, FE-AAS and WCAES) are simple, cost effective, simultaneous multi-element techniques which provide great sensitivity and limits of detection competitive with graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). The tungsten coil requires no water cooling system and offers a stable, simple, inexpensive and rapid heating atomizer. Most importantly, the tungsten coil has the option for portable field analysis unlike GFAAS.
