Studies have shown that the attraction, development, and retention of employees can affect the productivity and competitiveness of a firm. Human capital is one of the principle drivers of corporate success and competitive ability, but highly skilled and motivated teams can be difficult to form and retain in poorly developed labor markets. In the Philippines, employee turnover is a major concern for multinational agribusiness firms engaged in the production, transport, and marketing of fresh fruits and vegetables to global export markets. The extant literature suggests that a rigid bureaucracy, meager pay, abusive supervisors, few prospects for advancement, or poorly thought-out constructs of management and human resource development may prompt low levels of employee loyalty. This research study used a validated questionnaire to examine one such multinational corporation operating in the Philippines in an effort to gauge the drivers of employee tenure and determine how a set of standard variables were related to general satisfaction. The study sought to identify combinations of factors that might entice employees to quit and go to work for competing firms, and also to determine what steps a firm can take to make it a more desirable place to work. The results of the study show that Philippine agribusiness workers value activity, achievement, responsibility, advancement, variety, and creativity in their jobs with this company. The research also quantifies some of the concerns of the employees, and suggests that firms take these concerns seriously in order to ensure the general satisfaction of employees in all ranks within the firm, thereby increasing employee retention.
