This exploratory study examines structural variations in respiratory related mortality for the province of Ontario between 1976 and 1996. Multiple decrement life tables containing approximations of continuous hazard and density functions are the main analytical tools. Males experienced declines in respiratory related mortality hazards over the 20 year period. Conversely, females experienced large increases in respiratory related mortality hazards, especially with respiratory related cancers. A common pattern among males and females regarding respiratory related deaths was that the relative frequency of death declined throughout middle and early late adulthood, but increased at the advanced age groups. Consequently, deaths due to respiratory related diseases were occurring at higher ages over time. It was also found that the data on bronchitis, emphysema and asthma for [1976] and [1996] were not comparable. A change in coding practices among physicians was the probable reason for lack of comparability over time and between ICDA revisions.
