Congruence between personality and environment is an important factor influencing health; individuals with a self-healing personality appear to have an emotional equilibrium resulting from the right combination or match of activities appropriate for the individual (Friedman, 1990; 1992). A misfit between person and environment has been related to increased psychological strain associated with decreased mental and physical health.

The present study analyzed 559 men from the 70-year Terman Life-Cycle Study to investigate whether congruence between personality and occupation affects mortality risk. Specific predictors are adult career-oriented personality characteristics (derived from career interests and values), adult occupational environment (based on occupational choices), and the congruence between personality and environment. Possible confounding variables as well as possible explanatory health behaviors (obesity/BMI, smoking, and alcohol use) were examined.

First, reliable predictors were created by identifying participants' career-oriented personality types based on Holland's scoring scales, using participants' Strong Vocational Interest Blank scores (Campbell, 1971; Campbell & Holland, 1972), which were collected by Terman in 1940. Second, an environmental type was established for each participant, based on his 1940 occupation, using the of Holland Occupational Codes (Gottfredson & Holland, 1996). Third, two main analytic procedures were applied to identify the level of congruence between participants' personality and environmental types. Fourth, Cox hazard regression analyses (survival analyses) were conducted predicting longevity through 1991. Lastly, control variables and possible explanatory health variables were analyzed.

Results indicate that some Holland personality and environmental types, such as Social and Conventional types, are related to decreased mortality risk while others, such as Artistic and Enterprising personality and environmental types, are related to a slightly increased mortality risk. The traits and behaviors associated with each Holland type assist in explaining the mortality risk associated with each type. These results suggest that understanding life patterns linked to specific personalities and environments may provide more insightful information than merely focusing on the person-environment fit.
