Thesis (M.S.)--Touro College, 2006.
The threat of bioterrorism remains a reality worldwide. Although the probability of a successful attack is low, the consequences of such an event would be psychologically and financially devastating. Today, access to microbial agents is fairly available to individuals. Microbes can be purchased from laboratory supplies and recipes for homemade bio-weapons are readily available. Even many low-grade bacterial pathogens, properly used, can lead to severe health consequences. Often the aim of terrorist is not to kill but rather to instill fear into peoples lives and to cause widespread panic. The reason why biological agents are so attractive as weapons is due mainly to the fact that no country or state could ever be fully protected. Our only option is to be prepared.
