Results showed that each ethnic group exhibited moderate levels of depression, with Hispanic Americans having significantly higher mean scores than African Americans. In terms of gender, African American women reported significantly higher levels of depression than African American men. There were no gender differences found among European Americans and Hispanic Americans. For the total sample, functional limitations were correlated with higher levels of depression. However, when analyzed within each ethnic group, results were mixed. For European Americans and African Americans, lower functional status was found to be significantly associated with higher depression levels. These results were not found among Hispanic Americans. Finally, while controlling for sociodemographic variables, income was also found to have a causal relationship as a predictor of depression.

These findings suggest that there is a need for further research in the area of minority aging and health. In addition, the need for culturally sensitive programs to address depression in older adulthood is warranted.
