Thesis (D.B.A.)--Nova Southeastern University, 1995.
Managers at all levels face the need to motivate subordinates to achieve organizational objectives. The overall problem addressed by this study is the motivation of individuals within organizational environments and whether or not incentive compensation systems tend to increase productivity. Motivation is a complex and often researched field but remains at the heart of human achievement. Organizational efforts to enhance motivation run the gamut from imposed prerogatives to assisted individual meditation. Incentive compensation systems have been tried with various results. This study attempts to isolate the contribution of incentive compensation within at least one environment in order to assist managers in making decisions as to which motivation initiatives might work within their organization.Subjects--Topical Terms:

One hundred and sixty seven United Way of America organizations provided responses to a mail survey. Four of the five items designed to test the importance of monetary incentives were clearly characterized as important in high performing organizations. Hammer's model is supported by this study.

Motivator and hygiene factors were found to be important in surveyed organizations supporting Herzberg's two factor theory but monetary incentives were identified as somewhat more motivational than predicted by Herzberg. Additional insight is also gained in the operation of Total Quality Management programs within non-profit organizations.
