Thesis (D.P.A.)--Golden Gate University, 1995.
Current trends indicate that reductions in public sector service delivery have reinforced the role of private nonprofit organizations in diverse areas which range from philanthropy to education and health, to the arts, to social service. In light of these trends, the implementation of risk management programs which identify and address potential risk is crucial to the economic viability of nonprofit organizations, especially those without national affiliation. Risk management programs have the potential to minimize losses and claims by assessing those areas of operation and staffing which have the greatest capacity to incur loss and by taking steps to either eliminate the risk, modify the risk, assume the risk, or transfer the risk to a third party (insurance). The research for this dissertation centers on the design of a generic risk management model which would be utilized in small nonprofit organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area, which are not affiliated with national organizations.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Implementation of a risk management program suitable for small nonprofit organizations is important for reasons which include the abrogation of the charitable immunity defense, the limited availability of financial resources for legal defense, the acquisition of appropriate and affordable insurance, and the identification of management and operational activities which could incur loss.

Research methodology focused on two primary areas: a management survey and participant critique of a draft risk management model. The survey findings directed the development of the model, and the reviewer critique modified the prototype model. Findings from the survey and the critique facilitated the identification of those areas which would be crucial in the development of a subsequent design which would be relevant for small nonprofits in other geographic regions.
