Ballet Lubbock, a dance company in Lubbock, Texas, decided in December 1989 that its immediate goal was to complete a transition from a civic ballet into a professional dance company. To accomplish this change the organization planned to begin its 1990-1991 season by employing a corps of six to eight dancers. 520 $a The ballet, founded in the late 1960s, has experienced several periods of growth with part-time and full-time artistic and administrative staffs. In the early 1980s the ballet company established the Ballet Lubbock School. Enrollment for the 1989-1990 school year was about 120 students ranging from age six through adult. Ballet Lubbock is the only dance company in the city which performs ballet on a regular basis. Its season has included the annual performance of "The Nutcracker" which, since 1979, has been jointly staged with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra.
520 $a The project concentrates on a study of the problems related to the change in goals of the organization. It also tracks the management of the enterprise through its transition period toward becoming a professional ballet company. The study gives particular attention to budgeting and fiscal controls, fund raising strategies, grant proposals, and personnel and staffing. The study focuses on the problems resulting from the changes occurring in the company. The findings of the study apply to the problems and solutions of other performing arts companies in similar stages of growth.
