This project report provides a literature review and discussion of the effects of race and ethnicity on death penalty convictions in the United States. The methodology used for this project report was based on archival, library- and internet-based documents. The research on capital punishment indicates that race has both a direct and indirect effect on the implementation of the death penalty. This report examines two main issues relevant to capital punishment: the death penalty trial and extralegal factors that influence the application of the death penalty towards minority defendants. The research indicates that decision-making by jurors and prosecutors is affected by the race of the victim and the race of the offender. Additionally, the literature suggests various extralegal factors influence minority conviction rates, including the defense provided to people of color, and political support for capital punishment. The report concludes with policy recommendations and suggestions for future research.
