Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Los Angeles, 2006.
This study investigates notions of place in the writing of Masaoka Shiki (Japan), William Carlos Williams (United States) and Robert Desnos (France), focusing on the ways in which their understanding of "the local" extends beyond concepts of locality, site, position, and fixed identity. In the Introduction as well as in Chapters One and Two, I provide working definitions of each term, "the local" and "poetics." More specifically, in Chapter One I examine recent sociological and philosophical discussions of embodied and enacted place (as opposed to the notion of place-as-site which still prevails in scholarly discussions of literature), and in Chapter Two, I offer a brief outline of the history of poetics and literary criticism, then a general indication of the manner in which the poetics of Shiki, Williams and Desnos intersects with their understanding of place. In the rest of the study, devoting two chapters to each author, I explore both the international and national contexts for their emergence as artists, conventional ideas about place and the local that were popular in their respective societies, and each author's innovative literary investigations of the local. One can find in these authors' works, at different points, a localist, nationalist or internationalist sensibility, as well as a standard, mimetic foregrounding of place or setting; but more often, through their poetics, place is de-situated in the poem and prose work; it becomes an act of "taking-place," or of simultaneous embodiment/disembodiment, in such a way that the actual place featured in the work comes across as capable of being "ungrounded" and made anew.
