Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2007.
The qualitative phenomenological study sought to identify factors that were perceptions or individual insights when a strengths-based (Appreciative Inquiry-like) approach to assessment of students' work was used by an instructor in the developmental English classroom when compared to perceptions or individual insights regarding assessment of students' work in another developmental English classroom when the instructor uses a traditional method of assigning grades. This researcher used a modified van Kaam method (Moustakas, 1994) with semi-structured, taped, transcribed interviews to conduct this study. The data and information from this research might be useful to teachers, administrators, and counselors of developmental students to illustrate how using a strengths-based (AI-like) approach to assessment might enhance developmental students' desires to perform better in the developmental classroom and to entice students to be retained in school from their date of matriculation to their date of graduation.
