This is an investigation of how a group of six mothers make sense of constructivism when they study their babies' learning. What I am calling constructivism derives directly from the work of Piaget and Duckworth. As a researcher, I want to know how I can support parents in understanding a constructivist view of babies' development and in what ways parents might find such insight helpful or not as they understand their roles as parents and teachers of their children.

I formed a group of six mothers that met over twenty weeks to inquire into the learning of infants and toddlers. I suggested ways for mothers to notice what their babies were doing and how they could see the connections the babies were making. In order to make Piagetian ideas more accessible to the mothers, I also engaged them in collective group activities in which each attended to her own learning, and I selected appropriate readings. In supporting these mothers in their inquiry, I continually offered alternative views and helped them pursue their questions to keep them interested.

The participants' weekly journals, transcriptions of group discussions, and my contemporary notes and journal provided a record of the project. From this record I traced the evolution of ideas within the group and, to the extent I was able, for individuals. I looked for common themes across the experiences of participants as well as themes unique to individuals. I wrote about the formation and evolution of ideas within the group and portrayed participants' ideas in an analytic narrative of our work together after examining the data for the most salient and compelling themes. In facilitating the group and preparing the narrative, I became aware of my own learning about critical exploration and have included my insights.
