Nature preservation and social justice traditions are at a crossroads. Major American nature preservation and social justice non-governmental organizations have begun to work jointly on Third World environmental justice causes in which nature preservation and social justice issues are intertwined. There are some people though, who do not welcome a closer relationship between social justice and nature preservation movements. Part of the tension can be explained by the contemporary difficulty in perceiving nature and justice as being related. This dissertation begins by asking if a love of nature can be symbiotic with a passion for social justice.

Hope that a symbiotic relationship between the experience of nature and a passion for social justice is possible can be found in the lives and thought of the New England Transcendentalists. The Transcendentalists are respected within both nature preservation and social justice traditions. They are respected for their deep experiences and love of nature as well as for their deep passion for social justice. This dissertation asks how Ralph Waldo Emerson, a recognized leader of the Transcendentalists, was able in his own thought and writing to balance his love of nature with his passion for justice. This dissertation further asks what role education has played in the split between nature preservation and social justice and what role education can play in encouraging a deeper philosophical, rather than just political, relationship between the two traditions. A link is made between the split between objective and subjective knowledge of nature in the history of environmental education and with the larger split between social justice and nature preservation traditions. I suggest that one fundamental place to begin healing the divide between social justice and nature preservation and to prepare students for a twenty-first century that promises a joining of social justice and nature preservation movements is with the appreciation of student's subjective experiences of nature and narratives.
