Leisure that is described as serious, committed, specialized or involved is not refuted in the leisure literature. What is lacking however, is a valid and reliable measurement instrument to assess a serious orientation towards a pursuit. The purpose of this study, then, was to develop a reliable and valid survey instrument measuring the construct of Serious Leisure (Stebbins 1981b, 1981c, & 2001d).

520 $a The multidimensional framework of Serious Leisure contains six qualities of which 18 operations were tested. These qualities are perseverance, significant personal effort, durable outcomes, a unique ethos, strong identification with the pursuit, and finally, there is a career in the serious pursuit (Stebbins, 2001d).
520 $a Data were collected from two samples: a convenience sample (n = 256) of university students and a target sample (n = 276) of three pursuits (U.S. Adventure Racing Association, All American Trail Running Association, and Paddling.Net).
520 $a With the use of an expert panel, as well as a Q-sort, the content validity of items developed was addressed. Then, with the use of structural equation modeling, the items were analyzed within Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Resultant convenience/students model was tested for measurement equivalence in the targeted pursuits sample. Further, analyses of correlations and means among the 18 factors were conducted.
520 $a Mean differences and correlation patterns found between samples demonstrated preliminary evidence for the predictive ability of the new measure. The SLIM short form (54 items) demonstrated excellent model fit. Future replications are needed to adequately address the psychometric complexities of the SLIM within the nomological network of leisure behavior.
