Scope and method of study. The purpose of this study is to describe characteristics of the organizational culture of nursing education programs whose graduates have a high rate of success on the licensure examination. The study is based on Schein's (1992) model of organizational culture, in which visible artifacts are analyzed to discern the values on which the organization is based and the assumptions that underlie these values. A case study approach was used to study three associate degree nursing education programs located in the central part of the United States, selected for their history of high pass rate on the licensure examination. Observations, interviews and analysis of documents yielded data that were analyzed to identify common values and assumptions in the programs that promote positive academic outcomes.

Findings and conclusions. The values identified are the faculty as a team of experts, high standards, continuous improvement, student support, and application to practice. Assumptions that underlie these values are related to the importance of collegiality and interdependence, trust in the faculty and in students' ability to learn, the essential role of communication and information, and promoting students' transition into practice. In the programs studied, the faculty members are committed to maintaining the standards needed to ensure safe and effective patient care; while at the same time providing the support necessary for students to meet their educational goals. With the support of administration, the faculty members work collaboratively to continuously improve the programs, using evaluative data to drive their decisions. Students have faith in the expertise of the faculty, the quality of the curriculum, the learning experiences provided, and the support mechanisms that promote their success. These characteristics contribute to the success of graduates on the licensure examination.
