The aim of the study was to examine the cognitive capacities of captive bonobos (Pan paniscus): tool use, social learning and mirror self-recognition were the focus of interest. The research was driven by the observed discrepancy in technological behaviour between bonobos and chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) in the wild.

520 $a Firstly, an ethogram was constructed of the bonobos' spontaneous object manipulations. The results showed that the difference in technological behaviour between bonobos and chimpanzees in the wild cannot be attributed to a species difference in object responsiveness.
520 $a Further, we examined in four great ape species the generative aspects of object manipulation. The results showed that object manipulation in bonobos showed several features that might stimulate the development of tool use.
520 $a Thirdly, four sets of experiments were conducted in which it was successfully attempted to induce the use of tools.
520 $a Finally, the suggested correlation between tool use and mirror self-recognition was tested. The results showed that bonobos could correctly identify their mirror-image.
520 $a All results seem to indicate that the absence of tool use in free-living bonobos is not a consequence of poorly developed cognitive or manipulative capacities but that eco-social factors are most probably responsible.
